This is the time of year most people spring clean their house or at least a couple of rooms. Before I clean, I like to organize and empty out closets, drawers and cabinets that have accumulated stuff that doesn’t even belong in those areas. I check expiration dates, toss trash, and of course have my pile for things I no longer need or want which I will donate to Goodwill. I organize before I clean because I know I’ll make a mess and have dust bunnies flying around while I organize. Of course if I cleaned more often, I might not have such a dust problem! We’ll feature different rooms and areas over the next month, starting with bathrooms. I do have a big bathroom with lots of drawers and cabinets but you can take any of these ideas and use them in smaller areas. Most everything I use is from Goodwill, but you can find similar items at whatever thrift stores are in your area. Look around your house and you’ll probably find a lot of these items already in a cabinet or drawer that’s not being used.
The first area I organized was the cabinets under my sink…which accumulates the most items that don’t even belong there. For me, the easiest thing to do is to pull everything out and toss anything and everything that is expired, broken, trash or empty. How or why I have empty containers I do not know! I then group “like” items together and decide what I’m keeping or donating. If you’re someone who likes to have garage sales, have an empty box or bag to put those items in. I also keep empty containers handy that I can put items in that belong in another area of the house.
I already owned two of these baskets and couldn’t believe when I found a third one that exactly matched the other two. The basket was $1.99 as was the wicker basket I found to use as a trash can. I got both items at Goodwill. I put items I don’t use that often in the very back, with the most used items up front. You can find tons of different sizes of wicker items you can use for storage at Goodwill from 29 cents and up (most everything I saw was 79 cents to $1.99)
You can even use old or new gift bags to stay organized. You can label the outside of the bags if you have a lot of them. And seriously, the only person who’s going to see under my cabinet is me, so I can recycle any of my gift bags and it doesn’t matter if it’s from Christmas! I have all our “shoe care” items in my bag, which is easy to pull out as needed.
This wicker basket could also be used to hold towels, toys, cleaning products, “delicates” that need to be hand-washed, a plant….etc.
I organize my drawers based on how I use the items. In my “toothpaste/meds” drawer, I keep items I use every single morning and evening. One of the things taking up so much room was all the vitamins I take now, especially since most of them come in big bottles.
No matter which Goodwill I go to, I see these glass plates every time! This one was 79 cents. I have these in almost every room of the house!
I bought my black and white liner and pill-box at the Dollar Tree for $1 each and the plastic container I’m using for medicines I don’t use every day, was 49 cents at Goodwill. For medicine and vitamins I take every day, I now fill up the pill-box and keep the rest, neatly kept under the sink in one of the baskets. It takes me about 5 minutes each week to refill the pill-box and it keeps my drawer looking neat….plus I now remember to take my medicine!
My jewelry box is upstairs but I take my jewelry off in the bathroom on the main level. Using this glass plate (or a pretty glass), I can keep my jewelry neatly organized until I make it up the stairs to actually put it away.
All of these containers were 29 cents to $1.00 from Goodwill (a couple of these are duplicates of items I actually bought at the Dollar Tree but I paid about 25 cents less at Goodwill). I do have pretty labels I can use instead of the blue painters tape, I just need to find them. Just fyi….the baking soda I use with my toothpaste, as a dry shampoo and to clean out the sink. I mix the olive oil and sugar for exfoliating my face and hands, and all the bath products are homemade.
I say I don’t know how my drawers get this messy but I do…it’s because I get in a hurry and just toss things in places they don’t belong! Once I get organized though, it does stay neat for a long time. Hopefully I won’t be going through this process next spring but my guess is, I will.
I featured a green tray just like this that I picked up at Wal-Mart after Christms…I found this one for 29 cents at Goodwill and it helps keep my lotions and potions from spilling and staining the inside of the drawer.
Tons of hair and nail items….which I don’t use half of.
You can use construction paper for drawer or cabinet liners. I found all three of these containers at Goodwill for 59 cents each.
I actually got this hurricane glass jar from my friend’s garage sale (which she gave me!) but you can find tons of similar glass jars at any thrift store. Now I can easily see the colors of my different polishes, and it’s pretty.
More 49 cent finds….
It drives me crazy having to lift up everything on the counters when cleaning. Putting my husband’s vitamins in a wicker basket means I can easily move them to clean or, if company’s coming over that might be seeing the house for the first time, I can slip these under the counter for a nicer look. The basket was 79 cents at Goodwill.
Paper towels works just fine as a liner too…anything that helps keep spills from staining the inside of your drawers and cabinets. I found this organizer that looked like it once belonged to something else but works fine for this for 59 cents and I bought this votive candle holder for 59 cents to hold my eyeshadow brushes.
Before I bought the votive holder, I used the lid to my hairspray can to contain my clean brushes and then tossed the used brushes in this box, waiting for a cleaning. “Containers” that cost nothing!
Found this metallic container for $1.99 at Goodwill which makes a great planter. Of course, you can use something like this for anything. This would be a good size for under my sink or to hold hand towels too.
This plastic container with a handle can be used for so many things. I paid 99 cents for it at Goodwill. Perfect to keep your hair or nail products in. This also makes a great container for little hands…they can fill it up with small toys that need to be put away. Also great for cleaning products you can easily carry from one room to the other, a condiment container for picnics, office supplies…anything!
Just a few ideas on how you can look at items purposed for one thing and use it for something else. Don’t forget….don’t toss items you no longer need or use, but rather donate to your local nonprofit store….helps others and our planet.

Do you have a post with your recipes for the toiletries? I like to know when people have actually made and use them!
