My husband and I had been wanting to cook ribs but they aren’t something I cook on a regular basis and I didn’t have a recipe on hand that I wanted to use. Then my husband found this recipe called “The Best Ever Barbecued Ribs,” from Bon Appetit magazine, and since it looked easy and quick (only 3 hours in the oven versus 8 to 12 like a lot of recipes call for,) I decided to try it.
Were they the best ever? Well, I can honestly say they were the best ribs I’ve ever cooked and this recipe will be my “go-to” for anytime I want to make them again. We loved them!
Now even though I couldn’t make this for a family of 4 for $10 or less, the price still came in at a reasonable price. This recipe makes enough for 8 people but you can cut it in half for a family of 4.
PRICING BREAK-DOWN…
The rub itself came in at a whopping 58 cents and is what makes these ribs so delicious. I bought my spices at Penzeys because they are reasonably priced and always fresh. You can also pick up most of these spices at the Dollar Tree. If you buy your spices at the grocery store, you will typically spend twice as much. I used chicken broth to add to my pan juices and store-bought barbecue sauce instead of making my own. With the addition of the broth and barbecue sauce, the rub/sauce mixture (for 8) came in at $2.33.
The Ribs –
The Bon Appetit recipe uses either baby-back ribs or St. Louis-style ribs. We bought baby-back ($3.99 a pound) and country-style (2.99 a pound.) When making ribs, you should plan on 1 pound per person (for baby-back or St. Louis-style,) and about a half a pound per person with the country-style (country-style are meatier with less bone.) We liked both. Based on these prices, if you use baby-back, you’ll spend approximately $4.57 per person and $2.08 per person for country-style. A lot less expensive than eating out at a barbecue place and better than most places we’ve personally dined at. In fact, my husband said, after eating these, why would we ever eat ribs out again?
Adding some fresh corn, baked beans or some type of potato will keep the entire meal at a reasonable price.

I’m going to make these ribs in the Pressure cooker instead of the oven. I’ll let you know how they come out!
