The weather is cooler, the leaves are changing color or falling from their branches, and a lot of the summer blooms have faded and died. A lot of us might think raking up leaves is the only garden job we need to do at this point but actually, by doing a few more simple and fairly inexpensive chores in the yard, you can look forward to a better outdoor area come spring. (Which can actually help save you money and time when the warmer weather returns.)
These 10 tips come from American home improvement television host Bob Vila, known for “This Old House,” “Bob Vila,” and “Bob Vila’s Home Again,” who a lot of younger people may have never heard of but I grew up watching. I think he’s brilliant with his home and garden tips.
Most of these simply require time and labor but can help you save money next year. For example, when you’ve saved plants from freezing or becoming diseased you won’t have to replace them come spring and by dividing and transplanting perennials, you can save money by not having to buy as many flowers for the garden beds in the summer.
Two things he mentions you can do are a soil test and to make cuttings, which use products you can buy at most garden supply stores or nurseries. I found a soil test you can pick up at Home Depot for around $10 and a rooting hormone, also found at Home Depot for around $5 to $6.
