Pores…we all have them. Some of us are blessed genetically with good skin and small pores while others get to thank their genes for more oily skin with larger pores. And then there are those who have a combination of both.
Oily or unclean skin can cause oils to settle around pores too, making them appear larger as the skin around them thickens. While we can’t make them disappear, we can make them look smaller, giving your face a more even-toned, smoother and softer appearance.
Here’s my personal favorite way to tighten pores, which is simple and oh so cheap…
Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of water to make a paste. Apply to clean skin, let dry for about 15 minutes and then rinse with cool water. (My skin is super dry in some areas so I only apply this around my nose and cheek area where the pores are more visible.)
According to WebMD, there are a few other things you can do to make your pores appear smaller such as:
-
Use products that contain zinc and magnesium which help restore your skin’s oil balance and clear pores, which can make them look smaller. Ingredients such as rosemary and lavender can also help by easing irritation and preventing pores from stretching out. Products that say “non-comedogenic” are good choices too, because they won’t clog pores. And the ingredient salicylic acid helps skin’s texture and unclogs pores because it exfoliates skin.
-
Keep your skin clean. Washing your face stops pores from having to expand to hold extra oil or other buildup from the day. Exfoliating 2 or 3 times a week can also help.
-
Wear sunscreen. Too much sun can make your skin less supple, which will make your pores appear larger.
-
Spot-treat (like I do with my baking soda and water mask on my T-zone area.) Clay masks help too on the more oily areas like the nose, cheeks, and forehead.
-
Eat right. Food high in fat and unhealthy oils can inflame your skin, which can lead to clogged pores.
-
Take your makeup off! Leaving makeup on overnight clogs pores, stretching them out over time.
