Well it’s that time of year again where a lot of children are bemoaning the beginning of a new school year while some parents are jumping for joy. (Come on, admit it parents, there are summer days you’re really, really wishing for school to start.) And with the start of a new school year, comes the chance to make new friends, learn exciting new things, and get sick.
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,) simple common colds are responsible for 22 million school days lost each year and 38 million school days are lost due to the influenza virus. And of course when your child gets sick, there’s a good chance they will infect other children in the home or the parents, which can result in not only lost days of school, but missing work.
You can make yourself crazy trying to keep up with all the reports that seem to come out on a daily basis of what can make you sick simply by touching it. We know that hotel remotes can carry more germs than a toilet. We’ve seen the reports of how putting your purse on a dirty surface or floor can be transmitting germs to whatever surface you place it on when you enter your home. We teach our children to cough in their arm versus their hands. But what about the germs you can’t protect them from once they enter those school doors?
Since most infectious diseases are transmitted by direct contact, either by touching an infected person or by touching surfaces contaminated with pathogens, washing your hands is the number one way to prevent getting sick. But there are times it’s even more important to get those hands clean, or situations where you’re more prone to be in contact with those germs. Here’s the top 10 germiest spots you’ll find in schools, which you can discuss with your child, and perhaps keep them a bit more healthy this year.
*A germy area mentioned in this article is germs on a computer keyboard that kids share. It’s been a long time since I had a child in school but an idea I had would be to provide or ask the school to provide disinfectant wipes that all the kids would use before and after handling keyboards in that classroom. But maybe the schools already do that? And ew…after I read about desktops and thought of all the times when I was little and probably drooled on them…yuck!
