Have you ever tossed something in the dishwasher and it either melted, got scratched or actually became ruined? I admit I have. I’ve loaded items, like crystal wine glasses, in the dishwasher, knowing I should hand wash but thought, “It should be ok,” only to find it cracked or chipped due to the high heat. Most of the time, when you buy something new, it will come with cleaning instructions which lets you know whether you can or can’t put it in the dishwasher, which I personally sometimes don’t read. The number one thing I’ve ruined the most by not hand washing? My knives! My son bought me a good set of knives a couple of years ago and told me, “Don’t put these in the dishwasher Mom,” and I can honestly say they have never seen the inside of one. And they have remained in perfect shape, so lesson learned.
By correctly washing certain items, you’ll not only not ruin them but make them last longer, which will obviously save you money. Here’s a list of 11 things you should never put in your dishwasher.

*My favorite tip on cleaning cast iron pots and pansĀ is to toss in a handful of coarse Kosher salt after you use it. Wipe the salt out with a kitchen towel, rinse and then thoroughly dry. The salt will get any stuck on food items off without scratching the pan. Rub with a light coat of oil after every wash.

I like used coffee grounds to clean my cast iron. Just rinse out the pan, add about an inch of water, add used coffee grounds, heat to boiling and with tongs bunch up a paper towel and scrub away the stuck on pieces. Rinse pan dry and wipe with some vegetable oil, place in a warm (about 250 degrees) oven for 15 minutes. Wipe up any excess oil, let cool and store.

Kathy…thanks for this cleaning tip. I hadn’t heard of this but will try it next time I clean my cast iron, especially since I always have used coffee grounds. Thanks!

At first I thought, Wow! I’m now not as thrilled about the great deal I got on all of that gold trimmed Noritake & cut glass drink wear! But, then I decided that hand washing my good china sounds like a great excuse to buy a cute, vintage apron! And who doesn’t have memories of standing around chatting in the kitchen while hand washing dishes after a get together?

I can picture you in that vintage apron Cindi!
