For years and years November has been a month where I do a “cleaning/clearing out” of closets for items we no longer need/want. It started when my son was young and we wanted to teach him how to donate “gently used” items and to make room for new things we knew he was getting for Christmas. And if you write off donated items on your taxes, you want to make sure you do it before the end of the year.
Below is a list of items you might donate and the dollar amounts you can write off on your taxes. Make sure you get a receipt from wherever you drop off your donated items. I make a list of how much and what we donate and then attach it to the receipt we get, which makes it super easy during tax time.
To me, it’s a win-win situation….you get a write-off, donate to good causes (even if you can’t financially make contributions) and you get rid of items you don’t need but someone else could use. Coats, sweaters and other cold-weather items are always especially needed this time of year.
