Generic products are almost always cheaper than their brand name counterparts. But do they work as well? Are they really equal to the more expensive item?
For the most part, I personally almost always buy generic when it’s available, whether it be cleaning products, health and beauty products, or food items. When I’m trying to decide if I want to try out a generic something, I will compare the list of ingredients to the more expensive name brand. A lot of times you’ll find the ingredients are almost the same or even the same exact as they are in the brand product.
When it comes to prescriptions and over-the-counter medications (OTC) the savings can be huge. In fact, in a 2015 study, researchers found that pharmacists personally bought the lower-priced store brand headache remedies 91% of the time over the brand. In comparison though, the average household bought brand name over store brand 74% of the time. Hey, if it’s good enough for a pharmacist, it’s good enough for me and I’ll take the savings!
I admit there are some things I’ll spend the extra amount on due to a personal preference but for the most part, I’ll buy generic any day and pocket the savings. Of course if the generic doesn’t work as well, then it’s not a good deal.
Here are 22 generic items found to work or taste just as well as the more expensive name brand ones. Is there anything you’d never buy generic? Or something you always buy generic? We’d love for you to share.
