A younger friend in her 20’s recently attended an event which included a formal dinner and she shared that she had a moment of “panic” when they were seated due to the amount of forks per setting. She said she wasn’t the only one at the table confused and that after everyone was seated and the first course served, everyone looked at one another, waiting to see which fork to use.
When I was younger and in high school, a long, long time ago, we had home economics classes where among other things, we were taught how to set a table and what each piece was used for. But in all honesty, unless you’re setting your table that way every evening, you do have a tendency to forget. And most families aren’t sitting down to a family meal with 3 forks, multiple glasses, or even linen napkins. So where would you even learn table etiquette?
It might not be a skill you use on a regular basis but chances are there will come a time when you’re seated at an event like a wedding, company dinner, or some other formal occasion and there will be more than your basic fork and knife. (Or perhaps you want to set a formal table for a holiday or family event.)
Thanks to Phoebe at Liberty Tabletop, we have an easy-to-understand chart to share, which explains what’s what when it comes to proper table settings…thanks Phoebe.
