Every six months or so I weed through my makeup drawers, yes I said drawers and not drawer, and end up tossing out at least a half a dozen products because either they didn’t personally work for me or I just didn’t like the color. Surprisingly, I end up tossing more mid-priced cosmetics than I do the less expensive ones. As I was throwing things out and wishing that I could find “the perfect” foundation, mascara, blush, or the moisturizer, serum, and eye cream that I hoped would truly turn back time, I wondered how many women do the same thing? Because while I do have some favorite items that I buy time after time, year after year because they never fail me, for the most part, I’m always on a quest to find those items that really, truly work.
Even though I’m all about being on a budget, being on a budget doesn’t always mean paying the cheapest price. For example, if I paid $20 for an eyeshadow that never faded or creased and always looked great on me, I’d pay it. If you’re buying a couple of inexpensive shades every couple of months and then tossing them because they don’t work, well, paying the higher price would have saved you money in the long run.
Three items I’m always trying to improve on are my moisturizer, foundation, and concealer. All I want is something that gets rid of my lines (ALL of them), conceals the redness in my cheeks, erases the dark smudges under my eyes, decreases the puffiness, evens out my complexion; all the while looking totally natural. That’s all. Seriously, after spending most of my youth baking under the Texas sun without sunscreen, I think professional help is the only thing that’s going to bring back a bit of youth but that’s not in the cards so I continue my search for something that at least makes a difference I can actually see. I like a lot of items I’ve bought and used in the past but still no overall favorite that regardless of price, worked so well, I’d pay it.
As I looked through my makeup stash I found 3 items that I buy every single time I run out because for me, they work so well, I don’t need to look for anything different…
Coming in at only $1.99 (at http://www.jordanacosmetics.com/) is my all-time favorite eye pencil…jordana Easyliner for eyes retractable pencil. (You can also find it at Walgreens.) Even if this pencil cost $10, I’d buy it because it never smears, lasts a long time, and is easy on my eyes with no tugging. It comes in 13 shades and if you order online from their site, shipping charges are free for orders over $25. I have tried pencils over the past year ranging in price from a dollar to $12 but this is the one I use over and over again, and have for at least the past 5 years.
An item I swear I’ve bought for at least 10 years now is my Covergirl translucent loose powder that averages around $6.50, depending on where you buy it. I don’t know if I buy it because I love it or if it’s just because it’s familiar and does a well-enough job. I’ve paid more and less for others but this settles in my “laugh” lines less than those others I’ve tried.
For eyebrows, I simply can’t live without Benefit’s Brow Zing, which costs $32 at Ulta. (I know Sephora and other stores sell it too.) I think brows can make such a difference to your face, and as I get older and my brows become more sparse with a few grey hairs actually coming in, I need more help with making them look good. Now for some, $32 might seem like a lot, especially when you can pick up brow pencils for as little as a couple of dollars, but this stuff is like magic for me. Plus, the compact has lasted me for over 2 years now. I will have to pick more up in the next month as I’m getting low. It comes in 3 shades and comes with a pigmented wax for shaping and a natural shaded powder for setting. And I love the hard angled brush (for the wax) and the blending brush for the color. Occasionally I’ll use something else on my brows because I have other products I’ve tried out over the past year but my brows never look as good and then for the rest of the day I wonder, why did I even do that.
So $1.99 for my all-time favorite eye pencil is certainly a bargain buy and no big deal to our budget. I’m thrilled with these pencils and will continue to use them probably until they stop making them. Or unless, when trying out new products for the site, I find something better but with me already loving them and their price, it would have to be something really fabulous to switch over to.
My powder is again, a comfortable product that works but perhaps I could find something better, which would of course entail shelling out money for something else that might or might not work. (I am so bad when it comes to returning things I admit…chances are, I’ll forget about it and then it’s too late to return.)
And as for my Benefit Brow Zing, well, I don’t care how much it costs because I love it.
I’m curious as to what other women’s favorite beauty products are? Those products that you just can’t live without, regardless of the price or even effort you have to make to purchase it. We’d love if you share your favorites with us, which just might help me and others, when looking for new products to try (coming from real women versus what the ads tell us!)
