My daughter-in-law, Sarah, is such a caring and creative woman. She is a local Doula (doula is a Greek word meaning “woman servant or woman serving woman”.) The title doula, is now used to refer to someone who offers one-on-one, non-medical care for a woman in labor, (childbirth assistant, labor companion or birth coach.) Sarah loves her work, is in great demand, and literally lights up when she talks about being there for other women. If you are expecting or know someone who is, you should check her out (locally of course!)
But today I want to share something else she does, which she started for her expectant clients but you don’t have to be pregnant to enjoy this one. Sarah has combined her passion for art and birth and now offers “soul fire henna.”
The ancient art of “mehndi” (the application of henna to the body) is believed to bring good fortune and love, to protect against evil, and to promote healing. Mehndi has been and still is practiced for wedding festivals, important rites of passage, as well as cultural ceremonies and celebrations. Pregnancy and postpartum henna is used to honor the mother, protect the baby and celebrate the woman’s ongoing transition into motherhood.
But it’s also just fun! The henna lasts for 1 to 3 weeks and I think (if you’re local) a fun gift idea for someone you know who is pregnant or just wants a cool henna tattoo. Sarah has a lot of package deals, including shower and girl’s night out packages. Prices start at $15, depending on the design, time it takes, etc. She also has gift certificates available.
And if you’re not local, but pregnant and interested in perhaps having a doula assist you in the miracle of birth, you can search “doula” in your area.
Here’s my fun henna tattoo…this is the before picture. Once it dries, it will turn a reddish color.
