Laurie was our September Discover Goodwill Military Contest winner, which included a shopping trip at Goodwill, a fabulous new “do” from Heather Fangmeier and a gift card to The Cliff House at Pikes Peak. As always, we had a fun day!
We started the day off with a hair appointment with my friend Heather at her new “shop” at her house. Laurie wanted a cut, nothing too drastic, but something that would put a bounce back in her step, along with some shaping. Heather really listens to her customer’s wants.
As Heather worked on Laurie’s hair, she explained what she was doing and I learned some tips myself. Love how shiny Laurie’s hair looks as a result of a flat iron and round brush!
Have you ever left the salon and then tried to replicate what the stylist did at home? And not get the same results? Heather gave Lauire some lessons before we left so she could see how to style it herself.
Love Laurie’s new do!
Before we get to our shopping trip, I want to share a bit about Heather. Heather’s been doing my hair for the past 3 or 4 months and she’s so adorable, I want to adopt her! Heather was born and raised in Colorado and has lived in the Springs for the past 10 years (she grew up in Southpark.) After getting her BA at UCCS, she struggled to find a career job for a few years until she finally decided to make her lifelong dream of cosmetology happen. She’s been doing hair since 2011. (She also does waxing and makeup.) She works full-time at the 4th Judicial District Court House and does hair part-time out of her home. Heather’s the first stylist I’ve met who actually bases her prices on the time spent versus charging everyone the same price. She charges her prices by the hour because she believes her guests should only pay for the amount of time it takes her to actually do someone’s hair. Her services and prices are very customized to her guest’s needs. She’s friendly, style-savvy, and wants her clients to look and feel great. She does warn, “Allergy sufferers beware! I have a home full of very sweet and friendly pets.” She does keep them contained when you visit but I always ask for a “visit” before I leave with her Brindle Great Dane pups…who are the sweetest!
As Laurie and I were about to leave, I was talking to Heather about eyebrow waxing and Laurie mentioned she needed to do that at some point. Heather very graciously said, “I’ll do it now,” which she did at no charge as part of Laurie’s gift. Thank you so much Heather for volunteering your service and helping us pamper Laurie a bit.
If you’d like to make an appointment with Heather, you can email her at lovelylocksdesign@gmail.com She takes appointments on Saturdays and Sundays and I guarantee, once you visit her once, you’ll never want anyone else working on your hair! And her prices are so reasonable!
Now on to our shopping trip…
Laurie was most interested in finding tops to update her wardrobe. She’s a full-time dental assistant at Fort Carson so she wears scrubs during the week and likes to dress casual on the weekends.
We all loved the color of this Chaps sweater on Laurie (my friend and 719Woman fashion contributor Ashley joined us for the shopping spree.) And at only $4.99 it immediately went in the “definite” pile!
Laurie and her husband met in Dallas and have been married for 5 years and living in the Springs for about 3. (Her husband’s active military.) She has 3 step-children ages 9, 10 and 13; and a 2-year old daughter. And,she adds, she’s hoping to have more on the way. She also has two very cute Boston Terriers named Dallas and Addison, which I’m assuming are named after Texas cities since she’s from there.
Even though Laurie was mainly looking for tops, I always like to have our winners try on a few other items. This Apt. 9 dress (a Kohl’s brand) was comfortable, cute and very flattering ($9.99)
I think black and white looks great on everyone and it’s always in style. The Apt. 9 animal print top was $2.99 which looked great with the Claudia Richards black wrap sweater ($4.99). And both pieces can be worn with lots of things she already owns.
Laurie said one of her challenges is finding jeans that are long enough. She had been in need of a new pair of jeans and some fun shoes which she actually found at Ashley’s Attic ( https://www.facebook.com/ashleysatticcoloradosprings )before our Discover Goodwill shopping trip. She wore her “new” jeans and shoes so we could find something fabulous to pair them with, which we did.
This paisley Angie top was $3.99 and Laurie loved it.
We then added this Hollister Co. denim jacket (a brand by Abercrombie & Fitch) that cost $7.99. Along with the jeans and shoes, a perfect, comfortable outfit that’s fun and looks great on Laurie! Her red Toms shoes were $22 and Gap Long and Lean jeans $18 (both from Ashley’s Attic.)
Laurie is very frugal and always shops first at second hand stores before buying something new. When you can find outfits like these, who would even know you’re being “thrifty?”
Laurie is also an Independent Scentsy Consultant. There’s some great products that would make perfect gifts for the coming holidays.

We shopped at the Discover Goodwill store on Circle and as always, appreciate their help and letting us do photo shoots (and hog up dressing rooms!) And as usual, I left with a few buys for myself. As did Ashley!
We had planned on our good friend and Independent Mary Kay Beauty Consultant Teresa Schmitt to do makeup on Laurie but Teresa was sick and didn’t want to spread her germs, which we are thankful for! I know Teresa had to have been really feeling bad because otherwise she would have joined us, as she loves helping women with their makeup challenges. http://www.marykay.com/Teresa.Schmitt
I did offer to do a makeup makeover on Laurie, which is something I did for several years back in the day and have enough brushes, makeup, sponges, etc., to do a full makeup job on at least 100 different women, but we had already had a long day and Laurie was thrilled with what we had already done that day. Plus I think she just wanted to get home so she could show off her hair and all her goodies!
As we parted, I gave Laurie her final gift, which was a gift card from The Cliff House at Pikes Peak, where Laurie and her husband can enjoy some fine dining and taste some of the new menu items from Executive Chef Justin Boudouin. http://www.thecliffhouse.com/
Thanks to everyone who participated in our contest, which allowed us to help pamper Laurie for a day. One of my favorite parts of these contests is meeting new women and I very much enjoyed meeting Laurie and hanging with her for the day. Laurie, your hair looked fabulous and you were so much fun! Enjoy your new clothes and have fun at The Cliff House.
