There was a time when I thought there were definite “do’s and don’ts” when it came to fashion (and age) that were to be strictly followed.
Now that I’m of a “certain” age, however, I have changed my mind. I actually think that fashion decisions should be based more on your body type than your age. For example, I still wear mini skirts (maybe I shouldn’t but I do)…but they aren’t mini skirts that barely cover my butt and I still follow the fingertip rule that I’ve pretty much followed my whole life (I put my arms down by my sides and wherever the tips of my fingers touch is where I make sure my hem is at least.)
When I was younger I heard the “rule” that when you got older, you shouldn’t have long hair but my hair is now longer than it was in my 20’s and 30’s.
Another “rule” I grew up believing is that when you hit your fifties, you couldn’t wear shorts any longer….well, that 50 mark will be here in less than a year for me and I know that I will still be wearing shorts! In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if you’re in your twenties, thirties, etc., the fashion “rule” you should follow is what looks best on YOUR body.
What do you think? And are there any absolute fashion rules you think women should follow?

I say if you’ve got it, then flaunt it! As long as it’s respectable. I don’t think anyone needs to be showing too much or looking like they are trying to look younger. It can be done with class and still look nice.

I fully agree. i am 50 and still look much younger. I still get compliments and guesses that i might be in my late 30’s. (that should paint a picture)lol.
I still wear mini’s and shorts. And as mentioned above, it’s how you wear them.

Ruth…I agree with you! It’s how you wear them.

I can’s remember who made this quote famous, “you can never been too thin.” Now that I’m in my 60’s, I really do have to consider age appropriate clothing. I also have gained weight and can’t get away with wearing short skirts. So, when I get down to my goal weight, I will have to reconsider my clothing “options” and get back to you on this.

I have ALWAY dislike the fact that people follow “rules” when it comes to fashion & age! Like having to cut your hair & get that weird perm! I guess now it’s the short bob…
As for miniskirts, I have short little legs, if skirts go to my knee, I look like a box, if they are longer than my knee I look funky! I have to be very careful about the length. I do think it is funny, you are one of the few people I know that remembers the finger tip test, I’ve mentioned that on FASHION websites & people think I’m nuts!
I’ve always admired the style of classic actresses, such as, Grace, Audrey & Bette…so, does anyone remember when Bette Davis was on a talk show, over 60, wearing a mini skirt? I think she was also smoking, but I don’t advicate that, lol!
Thanks for defending us ladies who want to dress any darn way we want at any age!

Cindi…I agree with everything you said! And I’ve seen pictures of Bette when she did that interview. And believe me, I totally know what you mean about having short legs and lengths!

Well……I am 57 an still wear a mini skirt at times during warm weather. I have been told I have killer legs. I am an even 6ft an have very long slender legs. So yes rigbt or wrong I still wear tbem. Age is just a number an I agree with Stacey. I just dont wear them so short that my bottom shows standing up. So if you have the confidence WEAR EM BABY !
