I love reading the Independent for their restaurant reviews, even though my husband and I don’t eat out a lot. Recently Bryce Crawford wrote a review on Quijote’s Mexican Grill and after reading it, I said, “we HAVE to try this place out!” So my husband and I went and we were not disappointed.
Let’s talk about their breakfast items first, which you can order any time of the day. For 99 cents, yes, I said 99 cents, you can get three pancakes with bacon or sausage. There’s also the Meat Lover’s Omelet which has bacon, ham, sausage and cheddar jack cheese for $4.99. Another great deal among the breakfast items is the value eggs which includes bacon or sausage, potatoes, green chile and tortillas. And the breakfast burrito is a really good deal at $1.50 for a burrito filled full with egg, potatoes, cheddar jack cheese and your choice of sausage, ham or bacon.
I am not the most adventurous when it comes to trying new foods and I’m really picky about certain meats and how they’re cooked but I stepped out of my comfort zone and ordered (for lunch) the torta cochinita pibil (which Bryce had recommended in his review) and it was excellent. It’s a small, crusty sandwich square packed full of pork with achiote, beans and pickled onion with a side of their Habanero sauce. It was DELICIOUS! ($4.99).
My husband ordered the enchiladas (3 for $4.99). You have your choice of cheese, chicken or beef (he ordered one of each) and comes with a side of rice and beans. He said the chicken was delicious, the beef was shredded beef, not ground beef, and there wasn’t anything left on his plate when he was finished. Ok, there wasn’t anything left on my plate either.
We also ordered the chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and crunchy and the salsa was unlike any salsa I’ve ever tried. It’s a bright, orange, pureed habanero sauce that’s got a bite to it. Very different but tasty. ($2.99)
The woman who waited on us was friendly, informative when I asked questions about the menu and seemed to be genuinely happy we were there. The restaurant was clean, the restrooms were clean, and overall it was a great little place to grab a bite to eat. We will go back! (They offer sodas, tea and coffee for drinks.)
Quijote’s is located at 208 N. Union Blvd., Monday-Saturday 6:30 a.m to 9 p.m.
