It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican, Democrat, Independent or Libertarian….our military men and women protect our security and freedom. I had never hear of Joining Forces before but I saw Mrs. Obama on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” this week where she was talking about this organization, Joining Forces, and I had to look it up and see what it was all about.
Joining Forces is a national initiative that mobilizes all sectors of society to give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned.
Again, it doesn’t matter what your political party is or if you even like Mrs. Obama (I prefer to keep politics and religion out of our content because there are lots of other sites you can go to for that and opinions can often get hot, heavy, and negative) this is about supporting our military in ways I didn’t even know about. Chances are, if you live here in Colorado Springs, you have a neighbor, friend, co-worker, etc., that’s served or is serving in the military.
You can go to the site below to read more about Joining Forces but here’s the basic facts and how you can do something positive for another person (one of them requires no money and maybe five minutes of your time.) Here’s five different ways how you can support our military….
- FIND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES – Search for service opportunities by zip code or interest and take action in your community.
- PLEDGE SERVICE HOURS – Pledge service hours in honor of the service military families, veterans and service members.
- SEND YOUR MESSAGE OF THANKS – A simple act of kindness can mean so much. Say thanks to a military family today……I actually did this and it’s so simple but again, can mean so much to someone. The site has a link that you can just fill out a message of support and it gets forwarded on. NOTE-The White House does not receive or archive any of the information you submit because it is transmitted directly through the USO.
- SHARE YOUR STORY OF SUPPORT – How are you serving our nation’s military families. You can tell your story.
- SHARE YOUR OWN VOLUNTEER PROJECT – Have an idea to support military families in your community? Create a project and invite others to join.
Again, this isn’t about elections, party preferences or politics….it’s about supporting the men, women and their families who give their time, energy, talents and in too many cases, lives, to protect you and me.
I don’t have the money to support all the causes I would love to give to but this gives me an opportunity to do something for someone else, simply using some extra time or talents I have. This is also a great way to get your children involved in giving back and learning about volunteering.
