Hostess gifts are a nice way to let your host/hostess know you appreciate the time and effort they put in to planning a get-together. And doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive!
Every month we’ll feature a post on hostess gift ideas with pictures, where we bought the items, how much they cost and any simple “assembly” required. As with most things featured on our site, we’ll focus on seasonal ideas.
There are a couple of different concepts I base my hostess gifts on:
- Is it the first time you’ve been invited to someone’s home?
- What is the occasion?
- How often do you see the host?
- How well do I know the host?
- What time of the year is it?
And while a bottle of wine (if your hosts drink) or a bouquet of flowers are perfectly acceptable gifts, today we’re going to get frugally-creative and open the door to a ton of other options to choose from!
Hostess Gift Ideas – March
Bottle of Wine
A bottle of wine is an easy and always appropriate gift (if your host drinks).
Wrap it in a fun, shamrock decorated kitchen towel and tie with a ribbon.
The towel was $1.00 at the Dollar Tree and the ribbon was bought at Goodwill for 25 cents for an (almost) full roll!
Charger Plates
If you’re going to someone’s house who you know likes to entertain, a set of (four or more) charger plates is something you could give that would be appreciated.
These green charger plates are great for March and cost 49 cents at Walmart in the Christmas clearance section. You can tie them up with any ribbon.
Herb Garden Kit
Do you have dinner at a friend’s who likes to garden? Wrap up a few garden tools and some seeds. This will make them wish even more that spring was here and they could get to gardening!
The tools were $1.00 each from the Dollar Tree and the seeds (these are easy to grow herbs) were 98 cents. I always keep the pots from plants I buy and plant in the ground so I just rinsed this pot off and put everything in it…
Candle Dish and Tea Light
This gift is really simple and inexpensive. The green candle dish and tea light candle was only $1.00 (Dollar Tree).
You can present it as is since it’s already packaged already or wrap in tissue. You could also open it up, take the candle out and fill the dish with candies you know your host likes!
Lucky Bamboo in Green Etched Vase
This pretty etched green vase was $1.00 (Dollar Tree) and the lucky bamboo stem $1.00 from Ikea.
The lucky bamboo will last longer and requires less care than a shamrock plant or other “appropriate” March-themed plant.
Low-Maintenance Blue Aloe
This aloe (Blue Elf) plant will still be alive long after flowers would have died. The plant requires very little attention so it’s a great choice for anyone (“green-thumb” not required)!
The aloe plant cosst $2.87 at Home Depot, there’s about 30 cents worth of soil, the glass container was 25 cents at Goodwill, there’s pebbles in the very bottom (for drainage) that I got from our yard and the ribbon is part of the green ribbon I got for 25 cents at Goodwill.
