For the second summer in a row, we here in Colorado Springs were witness to devastating wildfires that burned acres, destroyed homes and people died. The Black Forest Fire surpassed last year’s Waldo Canyon Fire, becoming the most destructive fire in the state’s history, with over 14,000 acres burned, more than 500 homes completely destroyed and two deaths. As we scrambled to aid our fellow neighbors with donations of time, food, drinks and money, we cheered on the first responders who battled extreme conditions to save as much as they could. We call them heroes, they modestly claim they’re “just doing their job.”
Earlier this month I attended a brunch at The Cliff House at Pikes Peak honoring some firefighters who battled last year’s Waldo Canyon Fire and got to meet some of the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for us. I thought it fitting to use our July’s Discover Goodwill makeover contest to (in a very small way), show our appreciation to them.
So this month, I’m limiting the contest to those women first responders who so tirelessly battled either of those fires (The Waldo Canyon Fire or The Black Forest Fire.)
The contest consists of a shopping trip to one of our local Discover Goodwill stores (in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Woodland Park and Fountain.) We’ll help you find a fabulous “new” outfit and have fun while doing so! The Cliff House is sweetening the contest by adding a $25 gift card for our winner.
All you have to do is leave a comment telling us what you did during the fires or nominate someone you know who worked the fires.
The contest starts today, Sunday, July 7th and ends Saturday, July 13th. We’ll announce the winner on Sunday, July 14th.
*By entering the contest, you give us permission to post pictures of you in a future post.
Good luck to everyone! And thank you!!
